Although I admired the beautiful and patriotic Flags for Heroes in years past, once I joined Derby-Shelton Rotary, I purchased 4 flags, one each for my daughter’s grandmother, my daughter’s two grandfathers and my daughter’s great grandmother. My daughter and I then attended the ceremony for the first time. I had no idea my name would be displayed on a banner as a sponsor. My daughter was so happy and proud to see my name on the banner and to hear the names of our family heroes mentioned and honored.

I joined the Derby Shelton Rotary club in 2007. What I knew about the club was that it was a “Service above self” organization and that was interesting to me.

In 2010 I took the position as chairperson for community service projects. That position was and still is so rewarding to me. We read to the children in kindergarten through third grade in all nine Derby/Shelton schools and then donate the books to the class library.

When I read to the children, they came up to me afterwards and hugged me and told me they loved me. That brought me so much joy.

Another experience I treasure is when we deliver sand and salt to the elderly. I get phone calls from them expressing their gratitude with me. Sharing stories about how their spouse passed away and knowing they can sprinkle the sand and salt on their walkway so they don’t slip and fall is so appreciated by them. Being part of fundraising to help students in Derby and Shelton high school receive scholarships from our club is another thing I love doing in our club.

Honestly, I never thought I was much of a volunteer person growing up, but what I learned about myself is that this Club brought out the best of me.
