For the first time in the history of the Derby-Shelton Club, a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition was awarded to a non-Rotarian. Because of the major contributions made to the community, Gail Grant was named the recipient of the award. Gail received a medal, lapel pin and certificate acknowledging that a sizable financial donation was given in her name to support Rotary International’s educational and humanitarian programs throughout the world. Gail has been an active member of the community and is responsible for establishing an Interact Club in Shelton High School, where she has taught for many years. The Derby-Shelton Rotary Club acknowledges the positive influence she has on her students and the youth of the community. Our world is a better place because she has touched our lives.

The "Accoridan Man"

The presentation took place at Shelton Day 1999, a 15-year tradition of civic pride whereby the city affords its residents the chance to enjoy local entertainment, amusement rides, special attractions, food and crafts. This was the first year the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club sponsored the event. It took months of hard work as Rotarians solicited vendors, booked entertainment and bands, located booths, arranged for security, advertisement, stage areas, clean-up.

A newspaper supplement was printed, distributed and served as a source of information about the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club. It contained an introduction to Rotary International, pertinent information about our local club, its directors and membership, and our Four Avenues of Service and goals for this year. In addition, we publicized the scholarships our club offers as well as the criteria.

After months of preparation, the day began at 6:30 a.m. as a crew of Rotarians set out trash containers and marked vendor booth locations. The Rotary Information booth was set up and throughout the day Rotary volunteers were kept busy with inquiries, directions and special issues. In addition to general information, Rotarians welcomed the opportunity to discuss Rotary, the Youth Exchange Program and our Scholarship Program. The Rotary clam chowder/soda/pasta fagiola booth offered patron seating, accordion music and an opportunity to socialize with friends and neighbors. Participation by the membership was outstanding. The avenue was filled as the crowds listened to a wide variety of musical bands, watched dance and karate demonstrations, enjoyed the carnival, and sampled what vendors had to offer.

The Paul Harris Fellow Award was given at center stage by the chairman of the event, Past President Jeff Merrill. A brief history of Rotary International was given along with an explanation of our Foundation and the significance of the Award. How proud we all are to be Rotarians.

Shelton Day 1999 was chaired by Jeff Merrill with a committee of: Ron Barisano, Bev Brown, Jill Bruno, Pam Hamilton, Ernie Luise, Bill Ostrum, Al Patuzzi, Jack Ribas, Mike Santa, John Scott, Wayne Strever, and Fidele Volpe.
