Stepping up in a crisis

Linda Holmes-Hannon presents Rotary's check to Audrey Dreyer.

A recent fire at Shelton High School had consequences well beyond the fire damage to school equipment. Audrey Dreyer, the school nurse, has been maintaining a special food pantry for needy students and their family for a couple of decades. Unfortunately, the pantry was a victim of smoke damage during the fire resulting in the need to destroy the potentially contaminated food. And it could not have come at a worse time as the pantry was full thanks to the generosity of the students and community who filled it to the brim during special holiday food drives.

Dave Grant, Sr., President Elect of the Derby/Shelton Rotary Club, and husband of Shelton High School teacher Gail grant brought the situation to the attention of Rotary's Board of Directors who acted immediately to help alleviate the shortage of food by donating $1,000 to help re-stock the pantry in time for the re-opening of the school on January 12. Rotary President Linda Homes-Hannon personally delivered the check to Dreyer and commended her for the incredible work that she has done in maintaining the food pantry for so long.
